Learning Layers

Open a New Image. This is 400x400.
Click on the Layer Palette Icon

I added 5 layers.

I flood filled each layer with a color and
added a number to keep them straight.
Notice the layers are in order,
1 on the bottom (first layer I made)
5 on the top (Last layer I made)
I staggered them so you can see the layers.

Layers are like panes of glass on top of each other.
Looking at them from a birds eye view (from top)
you 'see' one object. But really you are seeing 5 objects
independent from each other. You can move, add, cut
objects from each layer without effecting the other.
Keep in mind top to bottom.
Layers on top will cover objects under them.
Watch as I move layer 5 under each of the layers.
This is all done on the layer palette
Not the 400x400 image.

Click on layer 5 with the mouse. HOLD the mouse button down
while you drag the mouse down a bit. The cursor turns into a hand,
and you will drag layer 5 (notice the black line moves) under layer 4.

Click - hold- drag under layer 3.

Click - hold- drag under 2

Then click - hold drag under 1

This is how layers work.

I hope this help you to understand layers a bit better.
